American Legion Post Assists Disabled Veterans with Poppy Day Awareness

Ed Ricketson offers poppies to passers-by on Main Street. Legion members S.D. Pearson, Tom Brady, Norm DesRosiers, and Ed Ricketson discuss Poppy Day with local citizens.

Citizens from Warren and surrounding counties showed their generosity and patriotism during the Poppy Day remembrance sponsored by Warren County’s Reese-Hyman Post 96 of The American Legion.
Bill Loper, Gene Reynolds, Laverne McCullough and Mike Huebener spread the word outside Miss Jane’s.

On July 1st and 2nd, Legion members accepted donations for paper poppies made by disabled veterans. This tradition has been carried on since the 1920’s after World War I doughboys brought home the image of the red poppies that bloomed on the battlefields of Flanders.

Some think the red poppy stands for the blood shed in defense of freedom, but whatever the symbolism, the poppy has become a memorial to the bravery of those who serve to defend our country and support freedom.

Proceeds from Poppy Days are used exclusively for the support and rehabilitation of disabled veterans, while earnings from activities like the sandwich sales support both daily operations and services to veterans.

The Warren County American Legion post welcomes eligible new members from Warren and surrounding counties. For more information, ask any of the legion members, call our Service Officer, Tom Brady, at 465-2798, or visit our web site at www.warrenlegion.com.

The American Legion is constituted to maintain awareness of the sacrifices made by wartime veterans who “risked it all” to maintain the liberties we enjoy as Americans, to assist needy veterans and their families, and to promote Americanism.

The Post plans to later this year offer presentations to teach students about veterans and their contributions to our great nation, and about the meaning of our flag and how to show proper respect.
